Therapy, Life Coaching or Hypnocoaching®?
If you are from the older generation (1980 or earlier) you probably grew up in a generation where we didn't "air our dirty laundry". we didn't share our problems, or worries with other people. Therapy wasn't something we openly admitted to. And the only Coach we knew could be found at the local High School wearing a whistle around his neck.
Now-a-days, people wear their childhood trauma like a badge of honour. We are survivors, and conquerors! And if we need help through the transitions of our lives, we are open to seeking out therapists and/or coaches.
And maybe you've been thinking about this for yourself, but you're not quite sure which one you need. Well, it really depends on what you are seeking help for.
Each modality has a different focus and outcome. In this post, I will explain some of the general differences.At the end I will also discuss how HypnoCoaching® might be a better fit for you.
- Practitioners: Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Counsellors, & Psychotherapists.
- Time Frame: Generally long-term and open-ended.

- Emotional & Mental Health
- The Past (Root Cause)
Therapy is mostly focused on the past. What happened in your childhood to cause you to feel the way you feel. It's all about discovering the WHY behind feels and behaviours. WHY the problematic behaviour exists.
Since it's all about the why, the main focus will be on the past. Your childhood and formative years. Your family dynamics, beliefs, traumas and patterns.
The goal is to figure out the root cause, so it can be resolved. When this healing occurs, the idea is that it will create a better and brighter future.
In many cases, with standard Talk Therapy, it can be a long slow process, with no set end date. I have met many people who have been attending therapy for years, and still have no end date in sight.
- Practitioners: Life Coaches, Sport Coaches, Executive/Business Coaches etc.
- Time Frame: 3 months, 6 months, yearly.
- Focused on:
- The Present and Future
Coaching is mostly focused on the future. Where are you now? Where to you want to be? And most important, HOW to get there.
*When a Coach discovers there is traumatic issue from the past, they are not trained to address or resolve them, instead they would refer out to a mental health practitioner.
Coaches are very future-oriented. They will help you to clarify goals. identify obstacles, and assist in creating action plans to attain those goals. They provide accountability and support. And just like therapy, they do not do the work for you.
Most coaches will require their coachee/client to commit to a certain time frame or number of sessions and are very GOAL oriented.
Hypnosis-Based Coaching (HOW & WHY Hybrid)
- Practitioners: Certified HypnoCoaches®,Hypnotists with Coach Training.
- Time Frame: 3 months, 6 months, yearly
- Focused on:
- Present & Future FIRST
- Past where necessary
As certified HypnoCoach®, when we work together we will focus primarily on the Present and Future. If something from your past is causing self-sabotage, my Hypnotherapy training will also allow us to work through that as well is it's needed.

With HypnoCoaching you really do get a Hybrid between standard Coaching and Therapy which can help you break free when you feel "stuck".
